Gingivitis & Other Gum Disease Treatments
Those of you noticing early signs of gum disease may not be aware of your vulnerabilities to diabetic and even heart problems. Gingivitis, an early stage of periodontal disease can develop into periodontitis, a more harmful form of gum disease which, if left untreated can lead to tooth loss. This, in turn, can exacerbate the build-up of gum infections from untreated bacterial growth trapped in tooth gaps. The bottom line is that dangerous gum diseases lurking in your mouth can develop into gum infections harmful to your long-term health.
Detection of Gum Diseases such as Gingivitis & Periodontitis
Detection of gingivitis, an early stage of periodontal disease can avoid more severe cases of periodontitis. Gingivitis often follows the build-up of plaque that leads to inflammation from gum infection and even bleeding gums following teeth brushing. In this case, the periodontal disease has not progressed to irreversible bone damage and the teeth remain firmly in place. When gingivitis is left untreated, however, the gum disease can advance to periodontitis, a far more advanced case of periodontal disease affecting the gum and bone. The resulting gaps between the teeth and gums can lead to serious gum infections. In such cases, periodontal treatments often require periodontal surgery, especially when deep pockets are found. Often lasers can be used to treat this disease under this form of periodontal surgery.
Periodontal Surgery
Gum surgery is necessary when it is determined that the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical periodontal treatments. Following are the four types of gum surgery.
Periodontal Pocket Reduction
under this form of periodontal surgery, we modify the support around the teeth by reshaping the bone to a more physiologic form.
Regenerative procedures
This periodontal treatment procedure involves the use of graft materials to stimulate bone formation around your teeth.
Crown lengthening
This procedure for gum surgery is used to allow a restorative procedure or crown on a tooth which has inadequate structure exposed in the mouth. In addition, this procedure can provide a more esthetic appearance for teeth that are too short, or a "gummy smile."
Soft tissue grafts
This periodontal treatment , often accomplished with freeze dried donor material, augments the gum tissue around the teeth or in the areas of your mouth which may not have teeth present at the present time.
Laser therapy
After many years of investigation we have now added laser therapy to our practice. Laser treatment can minimize the procedures. Our patients report minimal post-op discomforts as a result of these treatments, many of which can be performed with minimal anesthesia and no scalpel or sutures.
