At the office of Dr. Kenneth Levine, we understand that being diagnosed with gum disease, or periodontal disease, can be scary, and we want to help our patients feel as informed as possible as they begin treatment. The following questions are common among patients considering periodontal care; if you do not find your question here, we welcome you to contact our office for more information.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

Signs of gum disease often include red, bleeding, puffy, swollen, sore, and receding gums. Changes in bite, persistent bad breath, or a bad taste in the mouth may also be an indication of gum disease. However, this disease may also have no symptoms! Scheduling regular dental checkups with your general dentist is essential in detecting periodontal disease. In these exams, your dentist and/or dental hygienist will monitor your oral health for indications of gum disease. Between visits, contact our office if you notice any signs of gum disease.

Is treatment for periodontal disease painful?

Dr. Levine and his staff are committed to providing periodontal care that is pain-free. In most cases, local anesthetic is all that is needed to keep patients comfortable during periodontal treatment. We also offer sedation dentistry (with oral medications, nitrous oxide analgesia, and intravenous sedation) to help patients remain completely relaxed during treatment.

How much does periodontal treatment cost?

The cost of periodontal treatment varies depending on the extent of treatment, the patient's insurance coverage, and the financing options available. At the office of Dr. Kenneth Levine, we offer several financing options. We will meet with patients individually to discuss their options.

Will I need surgery?

Dr. Levine and his team strive to provide treatment that is as conservative as possible and that is in line with the patient's desires. With these goals in mind, we will recommend the best treatment to solve your dental problem. If gum disease is treated in its early phases, it can often be controlled without surgery. Alternately, if you do need periodontal surgery, you can rest assured that you will receive outstanding, top-notch care with our team.

Can my general dentist help?

You should schedule regular checkups with your dentist, as he or she will be able to detect periodontal disease in its earliest stages and recommend you for treatment. We will work closely with your general dentist, who can provide all your needed restorative treatments.

What will happen if I don't seek treatment for gum disease?

Although periodontal disease progresses slowly, it should be treated as early as possible. Delaying treatment can pose a significant risk to your oral health. As the disease progresses, more and more bone is lost, and treatment to solve the problem becomes extensive. If too much bone is lost, it may be impossible to save the teeth or to place dental implants.
